Many years ago when I first started taking photographs, I had little interest in weddings. I didn't know what type of photography I'd dive into- I just knew I felt good using a camera. It wasn't long until I discovered the world of wedding blogs. I can remember how in awe I was by the wedding stories being told through pictures. A few of the first photographers I stumbled upon were some of the greatest in the industry- Jose Villa, Tanja Lippert and Elizabeth Messina. I was in love with what they were doing, and although I knew I wanted to take photos for a living, photographing weddings myself still didn't cross my mind.

Soon after my wedding blog discovery, I got in touch with Tanja Lippert, one of the most recognized wedding photographers in the Bay Area. I remember complimenting her work and telling her how much I enjoyed seeing people's weddings through her eyes. In response, she invited me to her studio and asked if I'd be interested in modeling for some of her photographs. Meeting and working with Tanja was a dreamy experience. I remember how attracted I was to her uplifting and captivating personality. The presence of her strength made me curious about her career and how she achieved her goals. She quickly became one of my biggest role models, not only because of her talent, but because she was a firm believer. I cherish the memory of my palms sweating, and my voice shaking as she and I talked. She asked "What do you think you'll do with your photography?" I sat there thinking to myself, "I haven't ever really asked myself that." I was just as confused as I was excited. Tanja said, "all you need is a little practice and you'll be shooting weddings on your own."

Because of Tanja, I was able to build a wedding photography portfolio. Her encouragement and belief gave me a major head start in my career. I am excited to open the same door she opened for me, for others just starting out in wedding photography.

I know there are many new photographers looking for guidance, because I was once in that position. Are you looking to gain experience and start or expand your portfolio? I may not be the best teacher on earth, but over the years I've accumulated many tips, tricks, techniques and overall experience in photographing weddings. While photography workshops may be something I'll organize in the future, I'm currently offering the opportunity for photographers to shoot and learn at real photo shoots and weddings for next season. During shooting and assisting, photographers will be be under no pressure and will not be expected to do anything but LEARN! I believe mistakes must be made to improve, and I will be offering feedback to each photographer that comes along to shoot with me. : ) Not only will I appreciate some of the help I'll get from these experiences, but I am excited to pay it forward.

Janet and Peter originally had a vision of a wedding on the Islands. After deciding to honeymoon there instead, they wanted to be sure that their love for Hawaii was incorporated into their Marin County wedding. Their traditional and classy day at Meadow Club was adorned with white starfish and fresh green and white orchids. Each table at their reception was named after a place in the Islands, and their guests signed vintage Hawaiian postcards. Their first dance was to "White Sandy Beach of Hawaii" by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. It was a song that had followed them during their courtship and always seemed to play whenever they would part. Congratulations to Janet & Peter! I wish I was in Hawaii with them!

I'm so happy that Kimmie and Tom traveled out here from NY to tie the knot at gorgeous Chateau St. Jean. I hope that their friends and family enjoyed the time they spent here on the west coast!

A huge thank you to Amy Bridges Events for putting this stunning wedding together! I am more and more impressed with Amy each time I work with her. It's a Date at The Powder Room did an amazing job with hair and make up- Kimmie sparkled the entire day! Thanks to White Robed Monks for officiating the ceremony. Park Avenue Catering provided delicious, beautifully presented food and delicious cocktails. I immediately recognized the exquisite florals and sure enough, the talented Catherine Scott designed them, which I could not have been more happy about. Bella Rosa String Quartet graced the ceremony and cocktail, and AMS Entertainment did an awesome job during dinner and dancing. Videography was provided by Justin Fone Productions, and I cannot wait to see Kimmie + Tom's wedding film! Thanks to Pure Luxury for transportation and Hilton Sonoma Wine Country for lodging.

San Francisco Engagement: Baker Beach, Cavallo Point, Rodeo Beach

Despite the high winds and bumper to bumper traffic this weekend, I got some adorable shots during this couple's engagement session. While we drove slowly from one location to the next, we talked about baseball and how much we love the San Francisco Giants. They surely paid attention to what I said about wanting to see the Giants play the Reds. They were so appreciative of my time and effort that they thanked me the very next day with two Giants vs. Reds tickets! They are such thoughtful clients. I'm so grateful for the wonderful people I work with and I'm so happy to to be photographing this duo's wedding in just a few weeks!

A Double Surprise Engagement Party!

This friday was Ana's birthday and all she wanted to do was stay in and relax. Despite her wishes, her boyfriend Aaron took her on a hike to one of their favorite spots. He had something important to ask her. Ana's birthday turned out to be much more than she expected- Aaron asked her to marry him!

Aaron had been planning a surprise birthday party for Ana for months. Friends and family gathered at Local Mission Eatery in San Francisco for the couple's arrival. Ana burst into tears the moment she realized she wasn't going to dinner for two. She was going to spend time with some of the most important people in her life. This gathering was a huge surprise for Ana, but it was an even bigger surprise for the guests! Everyone began hugging and crying once they noticed the beautiful ring on Ana's finger. It was one of the most exciting moments and I'm so grateful I was there to photograph it.

I'm so happy for Aaron and Ana. They are one of the cutest couples. I can't wait to hear more details about their Southern wedding!

Introducing: "The Guestbook Mat Box"

I've been eager and excited to announce my new photo product! This is a unique, fun and classic way for wedding guests to leave their love in a way couples can surely cherish it...

For years, I've been offering beautifully matted prints to my clients. Whether they decide on a collection of mats in a gorgeous box, or a stack of pretty folios showcasing treasured images- it always makes me happy. Giving someone more than a disc of images is so rewarding, not only for myself, but for anyone I photograph. Although I do offer gorgeous albums, they are not always an affordable option for some. No matter what my clients' budget may be, I'm always sure to offer different product options that showcase favorite images. The stunning goods in my wedding and portrait packages are made by the amazing handmade album company, Cypress Albums.

After shooting an engagement session recently, I started thinking about creative ways my couples could show off their beautiful portraits. Its common to see engagement images on save the date cards, framed on tables, used in slideshows or blown up and put on display for friends and family to adore and sign. But, I wanted to come up with an item included in my engagement sessions and packages, that would give their wedding day a memorable touch. Thats when my Guestbook Mat Box idea came to mind.

This box features couple's favorite engagement images, matted beautifully, and held safely in a handcrafted box. The color and fabric of every box is customized for each wedding's style. A cover image for the box is an option, as well. Photos are matted off-center in a variety of ways, giving each mat its own look and plenty of writing space. The engagement images are easy to switch out once the wedding photographs are ready, too! Couples have the option of leaving these guestbook mats in the special box, but I love the idea of newlyweds selecting their favorite signed mats and framing them to hang in their home.

This super sophisticated item is available in various sizes, and works best as a 10x10. The benefit to boxes larger than 10x10, is the ability of using more than one image per mat. I recommend a box of at least 20-25 prints for most weddings. These Guestbook Mat Boxes can be made to hold up to 34 mats. Below are a few photos of my sample Guestbook Mat Box.

Jars of Love

Last week I came across something I can't stop smiling about. At a charity benefit for Japan relief, Jacin Fitzgerald of Lovely Little Details was selling jars of homemade jam. Just from the labels on the canned goods alone, it was clear to me that Jacin's goal was much more than creating a yummy snack.

Jacin's "Jars of Love" are made to help others raise money for a good cause of their choice. Strawberry jam was sold at the For Japan With Love charity benefit in San Francisco. My sister, Andrea of Print Your Party and myself could not resist taking home a few jars.

These delicious jars of jam have helped raise money for many people. A young woman diagnosed with ovarian cancer was able to get a new wig from the profits. Patients at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center have also received help because of some Jars of Love. Medical expenses were less stressful for a friend that had a premature baby, and jars were sold to make eye surgery easier for a fellow blogger. The list of those that Jacin has helped through her homemade jam is long and bound to get longer. Jacin feels that these canned goods are a sweet reminder to those that have made donations through selling them.

Canning goods is something Jacin loves doing in her spare time, which she has very little of, being the busy event planner she is. Hulling every strawberry and prepping each cucumber to become a dill reminds Jacin of her late Grandmother, Mimi, whom taught her how to can.

Jars of Love are most commonly full of strawberries, but when Jacin finds good pickling cucumbers you can certainly find dills in her shop! She hopes to be able to try out a few new recipes including raspberry jam, triple-berry jam, and peach butter. Mmmm!

The next time I want to raise money and awareness for something important, I'm certainly contacting Jacin, so that I can spread joy, one jar at a time.

For Japan With Love: Charity Event, Blu Bungalow in San Francisco

This week I attended a charity benefit created to continue disaster relief efforts towards For Japan With Love. At the event guests were welcome to participate in a silent auction, indulge in yummy snacks, sweets and cocktails, all while enjoying great music and company. So many of us came together to help those in need. It was incredible. The event was a big success and I'm so grateful that I got to be a part of it. It was fascinating to be able to reach out and hug the creators, sponsors and supporters. Below are a few favorite photos from the evening, held at Blu Bungalow in San Francisco.

How this will work-

For Japan With (Lots and Lots) Love

Yesterday, among thousands of other bloggers, I was silent. Not a single post, update or tweet. This silence was to raise awareness, show respect and to acknowledge the devastation in Japan.

Two wedding bloggers, Utterly Engaged and Ever Ours paired up and decided to start a fundraiser- For Japan With Love. They chose to have all donations go to ShelterBox- an organization that provides emergency supplies and shelter for families affected by disaster. They had a goal of $5,500. In only days, that goal was more than reached- the amount raised blew them away. They have raised a growing total of $56,303, and the donation amount increases almost by the minute.

In addition to the donation page, the girls came up with an idea of a way to get other bloggers involved. They hoped to get "at least 50 bloggers" to join in on this fundraiser. They asked that any participating blogger be "silent" on March 18th, 2011. This was called the Bloggers Day of Silence. The list of blogs (wedding, and not) grew, and grew, and grew. Everyone wanted to help, and this fundraiser turned into a much bigger deal than Utterly Engaged and Ever Ours were expecting.

I am so proud to see my business name in the list of all the participants and donators. I'm excited for the amount of money thats been raised, so quickly. Of course its going to take a whole lot more than this for all that is needed in Japan. But, so far this fundraiser will send 50 boxes full of blankets, tents, water purification equipment, tools, cooking utensils, children's activities, and so much more. This video will explain more about what ShelterBox does and what effort the organization is making over in Japan.
